Mobile Ebook Sites (good for accessing free eBooks directly through your device)

ManyBooks Mobile: ManyBooks’ mobile website. Contains a huge amount of books, mostly from Project Gutenberg, and some RSS feeds as well. This is ideal for Kindle users and owners of other devices that have Wi-Fi or internet connections. The link to the normal ManyBooks site can be found below.

Feedbook Mobile: The mobile version of the Feedbooks website. Also check out the Kindle Download Guide. The Guide is basically a free eBook catalog that you download to your Kindle that lets you browse for and download free eBooks easily from your Kindle device. Check here for a guide on how to use it.

General/ Link Sites

Feedbooks: A great site that offers some unique services. They allow you to create RSS feed newspapers of all your favorite sites that you can download to you eBook reader. This website offers alot more than that though. To quote their own description, “[Feedbooks] provides an easy way to find, publish and download e-books in a large number of formats, while focusing on creating the best experience for e-books.” Definately look in the mobile eBooks section for Feedbooks unique eBook download catalog for the Kindle.

eBook Searchr: A search that uses a specialized Google search query to find downloadable eBooks. Give it a try if you don’t want to sort through the thousands of books offered online and just want to find a specific title.

Free Open Book Project: This site offers some very popular books for free such as The DaVinci Code and the Harry Potter Series. They also have quite a few computer related books as well. The only negative of this site is that the books are not in an easily downloadable form and are browsed as html pages.

Project Gutenberg: Perhaps the largest and most well known repository of eBooks and electronic reading material on the net. Contains many classic texts and covers almost every topic. Highly recommended.

Project Gutenberg Australia:  An interesting alternative to the US Project Gutenberg. To quote Wikipedia, “Because of differences between Australian and United States (where Project Gutenberg is based) copyright law, Project Gutenberg Australia contains many works not available in Project Gutenberg, including works by Margaret Mitchell, George Orwell, and Dylan Thomas.”

World Library: Host to a massive collection of eBooks and electronic documents. Also it is a good place to find government reports as well such as the Iraq and 9/11 commision reports, etc. Contains libraries of non-English texts too.

Memoware: A large selection of eBooks in many different categories.

ManyBooks: The non-mobile version of the link posted in the Mobile eBooks category above. They have a good list of conversion tools in their about page.

Fictionwise’s free eBook section: Contains a large amount of free eBooks. They also have a large pay section as well that you should check out if you are looking for something that doesn’t come free. (Note) You have to become a Fictionwise member to download the free eBooks– the registration process is free however.

Fried Beef’s List of 44 Good free eBook sites: A great list of free eBook sites covering some of the best from around the web.

Munseys: A collection of over 18,000 free eBooks in many categories and formats.

Archive.org’s Text Section: A huge collection of texts, although not the most surfer friendly.

Wikibooks: A selection of textbooks that, just like Wikipedia, are open and editable by anyone.

Mobile Read Forums: A part of the MobileRead forums where people post free eBooks. Alot of them can be found on other sites but this is a good place to look if you want a book in a specific format and are having trouble finding it.

Science Fiction/ Fantasy

Baen Free Book Library: A large collection of science fiction and fantasy books for downloading.

Technical/ Computer Related

Free Tech Books: Exactly as the site title implies, a collection of free tech related eBooks. A nice assortment of books here.

Open Book Project: A small collection of computer related books. Focuses on the Python programming language.

O’Reilly Open Books: Many of O’Reilly books are available for free in electronic form. If you can’t find a downloadable version at this site copy the book title and search for it at Archive.org where many of O’Reilly’s free eBooks are hosted.
